To begin talking about web searching, we need to first talk about the the Internet. What is the Internet?  You've probably heart the definition that the Internet is an "information highway."  That is actually a very good analogy, but we can go a step further.  "The Internet is a collection of interconnected computers around the planet.  It's made up of the WWW, email, and others ways of transferring information between computers."  

How do computers communicate on the Internet?  By using TCP/IP protocols.  This allows computers to talk to each other and to exchange information.
